The Heritage Center at Cobbs Creek: Honoring a Storied History
The documented history of Cobbs Creek spans several centuries, beginning with the Unami settling along the creek formerly known as “Karakung” and continuing on through European settlement, the fight for Independence, the US Civil War and the struggle for emancipation – all before it began its legacy as one of the first public golf courses accessible to all in 1916.
The result of Philadelphia’s key club men banding together to create a place where everyone could enjoy the game they loved, Cobbs Creek Golf Course has been representative of the City of Brotherly Love from its earliest days: a place where populations previously excluded by cost, accessibility, or prejudice were welcomed. No story is more emblematic of this history perhaps than that of Charlie Sifford: the man who shattered barriers in professional golf, and called Cobbs Creek his home course.
Nestled within the newly restored course, The Heritage Center will celebrate this rich history as a center for learning for all ages and allow all of our visitors to experience how this Philadelphia landmark came to be.
